Fellows Named for Entrepreneurship Research

A new group of scholars was tapped by the Kauffman Foundation for fellowships in entrepreneurship research. Each fellow's university will receive a grant of $35,000 over two years to support their research activities. The Kauffman Junior Faculty Fellowship in Entrepreneurship Research (KJFF) program recognizes junior faculty members in the United States whose research has the potential to make significant contributions to the body of literature in entrepreneurship.

Earlier this year, the Kauffman Foundation began to publish occasional Entrepreneurship Policy Digests to examine research and findings on policy issues that move the needle on new firm formation and economic growth at the state and federal levels. The digests cover actionable policy resources and recommendations -- and now you can sign up to receive a direct notification when a new digest is available.

Cautious? Optimistic? How About Both?

It has been a while, so we thought we should check in on the Small Business Optimism Index compiled by the National Federation of Independent Businesses. The last time we highlighted the index, it showed entrepreneurs’ confidence trending higher overall but slipping somewhat in the fall of 2013. Since that point, entrepreneurs appear to have rallied and are feeling a bit better about their prospects – but that still looks to be more like cautious optimism than a full-fledged celebration.

Good News for Great Lakes Entrepreneurs

While technology and the viral nature of social media has made it possible to launch a startup with a global reach from day one, the funding to enable those startups still comes a lot closer to home. According to the latest Halo Report (Q1 2014) on angel investing, three out of every four angel deals are between an investor and company in the same state -- and the average size of those deals ($1.23M) is on the rise. That is good news for entrepreneurs in Illinois, Indiana, Michigan, Ohio and Wisconsin – who are seeing an increasing amount of deals and dollars lately.
