GEW Shows Us A Glass Half Full

Everywhere you look in the media these days you see alleged signs of impending economic doom—from the ‘financial cliff’ threatening  to punish United States policymakers if they can’t reach agreement soon to the Eurozone crisis with the Greek economy on the edge of collapse. Certainly all very troubling, but it is only one side of the coin. For the past 10 days, I have seen the other side—a side full of hope and promise thanks to a burgeoning movement to embrace entrepreneurship.

Finding Belgium’s Startup Barriers

From an outsider perspective, Belgium has a very diverse economy with dozens of influences coming together at its prime location in the heart of the EU. Being the home to several major European universities, and a mix of service-based economy in the north and industrial-based in the south, Belgium has a diverse market structure that keeps it competitive and one of the highest income per capita economies in the world. However, when it comes to entrepreneurship, Belgium is not thriving.

Thanks to a new partnership, all Startup Weekend participants can help kickstart their businesses with a .CO domain registration at no cost for the first year. The .CO domain name scholarship program will kick off at over 40 Startup Weekend events to be held during the month of April in China, India, Norway, France, Algeria, Albania, Brazil, Chile, Mexico, Czech Republic, Tunisia, the United Kingdom, Belarus, Iceland, Denmark, Canada, Australia, Poland, Turkey, Uganda, Mongolia, the Philippines, and the United States.

Romania's Reach for the Future

Canada on the Rise

According to a recent index released by Forbes, many policy changes have made Canada the best country for business. The index evaluates countries on property rights, innovation, taxes, technology, corruption, freedom (personal, trade and monetary), red tape, investor protection and stock market performance. Canada jumped three spots from the 2010 survey, getting high marks for Personal Freedom (#1), Red Tape (#3), Investor Protection (#5) and Trade Freedom (#7). It also had a noticeable improvement in its tax ranking—thanks largely to a “Harmonized Sales Tax” and reduced corporate and employee tax rates. Is this resulting in a better climate for Startups?
