Supporting Women & High-Growth Entrepreneurship

While data show that women start more than 50 percent of all businesses, their participation in high-growth startups remains extremely low. In an effort to change this, the Ewing Marion Kauffman Foundation has announced a $500,000 grant to Astia, a premier business accelerator that works with women-led startups. The grant represents a commitment from both organizations to strategically work together to advance the participation of women in high-growth entrepreneurship.

When Politicians Can't Be Entrepreneurial, Entrepreneurs Must Be Political

Is DC defunct? It sure seems that way. Just about everybody is bemoaning Washington’s dysfunctional political system. According to a recent Rasmussen Poll, 73 percent of respondents consider the system “broken.”  Only 15 percent think it workable. Fifteen percent?!  Louis XVI had higher public approval ratings on the day the Bastille fell. What’s next? A guillotine installed on Lafayette Square?

Entrepreneurship Rhetoric vs. Action in Washington

Venturebeat.com had an interesting guest column last week by Jeff Bussgang, a General Partner at Flybridge Capital Partners.  In “Who will champion entrepreneurship in Washington?” Bussgang reflects on President Obama’s speech on Iraq, where he declared that “Our most urgent task is to restore our economy and put the millions of Americans who have lost their jobs back to work…We must unleash…innovation…and nurture the ideas the spring from our entrepreneurs.”

Start-Ups Continue to “Bloom” in Argentina

In the 90s, Argentina became Latin America’s Internet center, which was a good sign of an entrepreneurial spirit among its people. Endeavor, the United States nonprofit that helps foster high impact entrepreneurship, had its first success in the developing world in Argentina just before the country’s last major financial collapse. Given Argentina’s turbulent economic history, I thought I would take a quick look at the role of entrepreneurs over the past 10 years since Argentina’s Internet startup boom.

Does Silicon Valley Need a DC Lobby?

LinkedIn founder and venture capitalist Reid Hoffman was reported by The Hill saying that entrepreneurs in Silicon Valley could benefit from a stronger lobbying presence in Washington D.C. because their concerns are often ignored in favor of older interests.
