China’s Chance

I report in today from Shanghai where preparations are underway for a major global summit on entrepreneurship at the end of March. The recent events in Egypt have put a spotlight on the role of a younger, well-educated generation of entrepreneurs peacefully channeling expressions of economic freedom. China has been miles ahead in reconciling a strong government with messy entrepreneurialism and offers some useful lessons for Arab nations as they grapple with enabling, rather than blocking, their citizens under the age of 25.

Obama Unveils FY 2012 Budget

The White House sent President Obama's proposed budget for FY 2012 to Congress earlier today--weighing in at $3.7 trillion. With Republicans looking to poke holes in the plan, Jack Lew, Director of the Office of Management and Budget, will appear at several congressional hearings throughout the week to defend it. In advance of those hearings, Lew appeared on the White House website with a quick overview of what the budget hopes to accomplish.

FastTrac Leading to Start-ups and Job Creation Across the Nation

Kauffman FastTrac programs in New York and Michigan are leading to new business starts – and the jobs that come along with them. Following an intense entrepreneurial education program initiated by Mayor Michael Bloomberg in March 2009, 1,000 NYC entrepreneurs have graduated the program. According to SUNY’s Levin Institute, those graduates have created 300 new jobs.

EU Leaders Facing ‘Innovation Emergency’

On the heels of an innovation scorecard that showed the EU is losing ground on the US and Japan – while Brazil and China close the gap – EU leaders used the Council of the European Union Summit to issue a call for stronger innovation and research. Facing an ‘innovation emergency,’ summit participants agreed on the need for: cooperation on large-scale research projects; less troublesome funding formalities; and, new sources of venture capital for innovative start-up enterprises.

In Pursuit of Growth: Where Next?

In his 2011 State of the Union Address a couple of weeks ago, President Obama talked about the importance of innovation to create the jobs and industries of the future. A few days later, the White House released a new innovation strategy as part of the President’s plan to “win” that future. This strategy said: “America’s future economic growth and international competitiveness depend on our capacity to innovate. We can create the jobs and industries of the future by doing what America does best – investing in the creativity and imagination of our people. To win the future, we must out-innovate, out-educate, and out-build the rest of the world.” A few days later the White House, in partnership with the Kauffman Foundation and Case Foundation, launched a Startup America initiative aimed at doing just this.
