POPVOX Shines Spotlight on Startups

Posted by: Mark Marich on February 13, 2012 Source: Policy Dialogue on Entrepreneurship

A new startup aimed at engaging the American public in the legislative process is shining a light on a handful of bills that could have a direct impact on entrepreneurship throughout the US.

According to the POPVOX website, it “bridges the gap between the input the public wants to provide and the information Members of Congress want and need to receive.” It is an impressively-designed site with functionality that enables users to learn about pending legislation, click a button to express their support or opposition and engage in ongoing conversations through the site and other social media networks. Going the opposite direction, it’s also a tool for policymakers to get improved data through informed input and civic dialogue.

Following an invite to the State of Entrepreneurship Address in Washington, DC, last week, it pointed to the following measures currently under consideration:

  • HR 2941: The Startup Expansion and Investment Act (and S 1962) makes the internal control reporting and assessment requirements of the Sarbanes-Oxley Act of 2002 optional for certain smaller companies.
  • S 1965: The Startup Act (and HR 3427) jump-starts economic recovery through the formation and growth of new businesses.
  • HR 3571: The Entrepreneur Startup Growth Act directs the Commissioner of Internal Revenue to establish a self-employment tax initiative grant program.
  • S 565: The Startup Visa Act (and HR 1114) establishes an employment-based immigrant visa for alien entrepreneurs who have received significant capital from investors to establish a business in the U.S.
  • S 2088: Amending the tax code to permanently double the amount of start-up expenses entrepreneurs can deduct from their taxes. (Just introduced.)

We’ve covered or at least mentioned each of those here through PDE, but what do you think? Visit the site, learn more about the bills—who is sponsoring them and what organizations are backing them—and share your voice.
