Starting Up in China (Livestream REPLAY from Sydney)

Since the fall of Mao Zedong-style communism in 1978, the People’s Republic of China has experienced an unprecedented economic boom. Think of it like this: In today's China, every single private company — from mom-and-pop dumpling stands to Internet behemoths like Baidu and Sina — originated sometime within the past 33 years, with most created within the past two decades.

This workshop will provide practical tips for those considering making the move out East, while also offering a whirlwind tour of China’s captivating start-up culture. Topics include:

- A 10-minute scrolling tour of the Chinese internet (a.k.a. “attack of the internet clones")

- Chinese business culture: Making friends and influencing (Chinese) people

- Marketing on Chinese social media

- HR: Hiring (and sometimes firing) local employees

- Moving to and living in China

Eli Bildner co-founded (创思), one of mainland China's first social enterprise incubators, and also served as a co-director of ECSEL, a fellowship program for China's top social entrepreneurs. Eli has also worked in western China, Hong Kong, and Japan.

Mike Tannenbaum received his MA in International Finance from Johns Hopkins-SAIS. Prior to co-founding ConnectCubed, Mike worked as an investment banker at J.P. Morgan in Hong Kong, and as a consultant in the World Bank's Investment Climate Advisory Services practice.
