Ladies Learning Code Intro to App Design
Hey you! Have you join the Ladies Learning Code email list? If not, click here.
What is Ladies Learning Code?
We're a group of women in Toronto who provide women (and men*) the opportunity to learn beginner-friendly computer programming skills through hands-on, social and collaborative workshops.
(*Men are welcome to attend workshops - and they do - but we request that you bring with you a female learner where possible.)
A special thank you to Launch Academy for providing an awesome venue for this workshop.
Designing Windows 8 Applications
*Please note: all workshop attendees must have Photoshop installed on their computer. A free trial is available here!*
Why App Design?
Ever wanted to design an application? Wish you had an awesome app that you and your friends could download and use? If your answer is yes, then this workshop is for you! Join us to learn how to design apps using Photoshop. We'll go through the process of brainstorming features, wireframing, and complete the visual design for an app using Photoshop. You'll create your very own personalized To-Do list application, designed for the Windows 8 platform. (Note that you do not need to have Windows 8 installed in order to participate in our "Introduction to App Design" workshop, though you do need Photoshop!)
The Ladies Learning Code Introduction to App Design workshop is a hands-on experience designed to give you a first hand look at how to design an awesome to-do list app for Windows 8. Learn about app design and Photoshop all in one jam-packed, hands-on day!
This workshop is for beginners, but there are some additional requirements - though you don't need to be runnning Windows 8 for this workshop, you need to have Photoshop installed (a trial version is fine).
Thanks to Launch Academy for offering us their great space for this event and special thanks to our very talented lead instructor Kharis O'Connell @rmtwrkr for leading this event!
During the session, you’ll learn:
how to wireframe and then use Photoshop to design an app
how to hold productive brainstorm sessions to come up with app ideas and features
basic sketching techniques to help you rapidly test ideas to see if they work
key design principles (you've been asking for it, so here it is!)
tips and techniques on how to apply branding and styling to an app
Is this workshop for you?
The workshop has been designed for individuals with no previous design knowledge. We will be covering the full process from conception and planning all the way through to visual design. We hope you have some familiarity with either smart phone or tablet-based apps, but this certainly isn't a requirement. Those familiar with designing and creating apps on other platforms will find value in looking at design through a different lens. Maybe you can even apply some key principles to your own ideas!
Requirements for the Designing Windows 8 Apps workshop:
You must own or have access to a laptop for which you have administrative permissions. You must have Photoshop installed (you can get a trial version for free here). Workshops are taught in English. Please be sure to bring your powercord. Note that you DO NOT need to have Windows 8 installed in order to participate in this workshop.
*Are you quaified to help teach this workshop? Great - our workshops absolutely wouldn't be possible without the incredible developers who help us out! Please join our developer email list here.

What participants say about our workshops:
"After years of teaching myself how to code, I wasn't sure how I'd find the collaborative experience of an LLC workshop - but it completely exceeded my expectations. The lead instructor was clear and thorough, and the volunteer instructors were always ready to throw new challenges at us the moment they saw we'd completed the current task. Solving a coding problem has always been exciting for me, but having a group of people equally excited about it was amazing!"
"[My favourite part was] the casual nature of things, and the fact that all the instructors walked around and helped out learners everywhere around the room - so I got to meet and talk to a bunch of people who were experienced and gain some perspectives. The food was great too. ;)"
"I love how excited the instructors were to teach us - whenever I understood something they'd throw another problem at me, and once I solved that they'd be as excited about it as I was!"
