Weekly Wisdom from Kauffman: America’s high-growth health and drug companies reside in some unexpected locales

More than 6 percent of Inc. 500 firms work in the health and drug space, making it the No. 5 industrial sector for these fast-growing companies from 2005 to 2010. But these medical innovators aren’t all concentrated in the Silicon Valley.

The Kauffman Foundation’s report, “The Ascent of America’s High-Growth Companies,” revealed that Dallas has a high concentration (12 percent) of health and drug companies. The “surprise” cities of Philadelphia, Baltimore, Buffalo, and Indianapolis are also home to health and drug firms. Other cities with sizable concentrations of health and drug companies included Los Angeles, New York, San Francisco, and Boston.
