Understanding Your Data Before Building Predictive Models http://entrepreneurship.org/en/sitecore/content/Sites/Entrepreneurship_org/Home/Events/Listings/Entrepreneurship/2014/August/Understanding-Your-Data-Before-Building-Predictive-Models.aspx Overview: Data-driven decisions from big data, data science, and predictive analytics has quickly become among the most important areas of growth in organizations. Skills in these areas are specialized and often lacking in traditional education.

Effective predictive modeling does not require a PhD in mathematics, statistics, or hard science fields to do well. Many effective and even famous data miners and predictive modelers have BS or BA degrees in non-technical fields. However, it does require a qualitative understanding of what the predictive modeling process s about, what algorithms do, what their limitations are, how to change their behavior, and what kind of data is necessary for building predictive models.

Even individuals with experience in analytics understand that predictive modeling requires not only an understand of the science, but also decisions throughout a modeling project that are not (indeed cannot be) governed fully by the science; there is "art" and tradeoffs we as analysts make at every stage. These aren’t guesses, but are rather governed by the principles of predictive modeling: sampling, data distributions and their effects on summary statistics and the modeling algorithms, and how to determine if a model is good or not.

Areas Covered in the Session:

CRISP-DM - what are the main steps in the predictive modeling process

Key steps in defining modeling objectives

The most important principles in setting up data for modeling

Brief overview of key modeling algorithms

Matching model accuracy to business objectives

Best Practices for Governance of Enterprise Reference Data Management http://entrepreneurship.org/en/sitecore/content/Sites/Entrepreneurship_org/Home/Events/Listings/Entrepreneurship/2014/August/Best-Practices-for-Governance-of-Enterprise-Reference-Data-Management.aspx Overview:

Experience shows that upwards of 80% of reference data may be used by multiple applications. Clearly, common reference data should be considered "enterprise data" and governed through the Data Governance group. Common reference data often crosses subject area lines and therefore difficult to identify which Data Steward may be responsible for managing it. Moreover, reference data can often be seen as an unwanted stepchild and left behind for applications to manage. However, many of the organization’s metrics and regulatory reporting may now depend upon common reference data.

Why should you attend: Reference Data Management is a valuable tool for the Data Governance team to enable quality and consistency across the enterprise. Often reference data is required to be managed consistently across disparate operational applications in order to effectively meet regulatory and governmental reporting. Inconsistencies and inaccurate aggregations can lead to significant fines, poor public publicity, and negative public reactions leading short term stock loses.

Areas Covered in the Session:

Identifying what is "common reference data" & which Data Stewards/SMEs are the trustees when reference data crosses Lines of Business.

Dealing with regulatory bodies & leveraging governmental agencies as sources of reference data

Creating new ways for informal governance of reference data while leveraging "natural entry points" to take advantage of business events in the business

Compensation professionals use "descriptive statistics" to convey the characteristics of data used in the development and management of pay programs. In this webinar, David J. Wudyka will describe a series of statistical concepts used by Compensation practitioners. The concepts to be covered include ideas such as pay structure development; "control points" in pay ranges, including minimums, midpoints and maximums; weighted and unweighted averages; means, medians and modes; weighted and unweighted averages; regression and correlation analysis; standard deviations, variance and data ranges; compa-ratios, and independent and dependent variables; and more.

All of these concepts will be explained in the context of their application in pay programs, including building a pay structure (i.e. sets of pay ranges), analyzing pay survey data, predicting

Executive base pay rates and total compensation from one or more independent variables, making associations in pay data between independent and dependent variables, and using comp ratios in merit pay programs and their budgeting.

Ways to Limit Your HIPAA Vulnerability and Liability Webinar By MentorHealth http://entrepreneurship.org/en/sitecore/content/Sites/Entrepreneurship_org/Home/Events/Listings/Entrepreneurship/2014/August/Ways-to-Limit-Your-HIPAA-Vulnerability-and-Liability--Webinar-By-MentorHealth.aspx Overview: Although there are many presentations, courses and services now available to help health care organizations to become HIPAA compliant, the real issue for the health care organization is to determine the most cost effective ways to understand their risks and to minimize the vulnerability to a breach and their liability when a breach does occur. This presentation focuses on understanding the responsibilities of the health care organization, the liabilities resulting from those responsibilities and the penalties that can be assessed as a result of a breach of patient protected health information.

The presentation addresses several issues relevant to both the vulnerability and the liability issues. First, the presentation describes how the health care organization can assess its HIPAA breach risk. The presentation discusses what a risk assessment is, why it is important and how to perform the risk assessment.

Based on the results of the risk assessment, the presentation takes the participants through how to mitigate these risks. This includes:

Issues that need to be addressed with the health care organization's software and hardware vendor(s)

The risks of a breach resulting from organizational members using social media, both inside the organization and at home; and,

The risks of a breach resulting from organizational members using mobile devices to access and store patient protected health information

The presentation also provides information regarding how the health care organization can use insurance to share the risk and how to keep insurance premiums to a minimum. At the conclusion of the presentation, the participant will have a checklist of items that can be used to understand and ways to limit the health care organizations HIPAA liabilities.

Why should you attend: There are so many ways a breach can occur - whether by accident, carelessness or or by intended actions. As a result, it is a common axiom that it is not if a health care organization will experience a breach, but when the health care organization will experience a breach.

The penalties for a HIPAA breach of a patient's protected health information can be severe. This includes monetary penalties as well as having to publicize your breach. We have all seen the newspaper articles and TV reports of large unauthorized disclosures of patient health information. If a disclosure includes the health information for 500 or more names, the health care organization must notify the Secretary of the Department of Health and Human Services (and this goes on the Office of Civil Rights web site for all to see) and notify local media (TV, Radio and newspapers).

Based on the Omnibus Rule, all business associates and agents of business associates have the same risk as the health care covered entities. Therefore, it is equally important for all business associates and agents of business associates to be cognizant of their vulnerabilities and liabilities.

This topic can be invaluable for an health care organization trying to understand their HIPAA vulnerability of a breach occurring and their liability when a breach does occur and looking for ways to minimize that vulnerability and liability. In discussing this topic, the presentation addresses opportunities for the health care organization to perform their risk assessments, as directed by the HIPAA regulations, how to mitigate the risks found in the assessment and some of the potential "safe harbors" that can reduce their risk.

The topic also spends considerable time reviewing the risks inherent in the traditional health care environment and provides references for the participant to address newer HIPAA breach risks resulting from the modern use of social media and the use of mobile devices.

Areas Covered in the Session:

Discuss what is a risk assessment and why it is important

Discuss how to assess the health care organization's risk and the vulnerability of a breach occurring

What is health care organization's liability when a breach occurs - including monetary penalties

The impact of the use of social media on the health care organization's HIPAA breach risk

The impact of the use of mobile devices on the health car organization's HIPAA breach risk

HIPAA's description of how to reduce the risk of a breach of electronic health information

The opportunities for acquiring HIPAA breach insurance

Public Clouds Myths and Realities http://entrepreneurship.org/en/sitecore/content/Sites/Entrepreneurship_org/Home/Events/Listings/Entrepreneurship/2014/August/Public-Clouds-Myths-and-Realities.aspx Overview: To correctly understand the benefits and issues surrounding public clouds, we first need to go back to the definition of "cloud." Different organizations (like NIST), vendors, and consultants have produced definitions that are often too verbose or address only one key characteristic of the cloud. It is important to identify the key concepts that differentiate the cloud from prior ways to procure and deliver computing resources.

It is useful to examine the hype surrounding the concept, propagated by a number of public cloud providers. While this is often anecdotal, this discussion helps customers challenge salespeople who recite marketing points without substance. It is also quite educational to see how certain vendors have changed their story as the new model emerged.

The next thing potential adopters need to know is what the categories of issues that cause all the fears about cloud computing are. Some of these fears are exaggerated: for example, availability issues, while they create a lot of adverse publicity, are not in fact as serious as people often fear, and there are good reasons for that. On the other hand, other issues are actually often understated (e.g., the problem of data residency in applications that manipulate data associated with some form of national interest or in highly regulated industry sectors).

After considering both extremes of this ongoing debate, a customer needs to develop a balanced vire - not only of the technology, but also of the sourcing and governance issues that can make a project fail. In support of this evaluation, it helps to understand the evolution of multi-tenant computing solutions from the start of timesharing 50 years ago, to the current types of offerings. There are common principles, but the cloud does bring something genuinely new compared to the initial IBM offerings of the 1960s. It is also important to read or listen to case studies, of which there are now a good number. Some of them are public, while others are shared in conferences and consortia. Vendor-published stories should be considered suspect. Finally, it is also important to understand the full scope of services that can be procured in the cloud: it is not just CRM applications, Web sites, or disk space, but it includes many more types of communication and collaboration capabilities, and this provides an opportunity to "start small" and get familiar with the issues while starting to save some money and decrease cycle times.

Once all this is understood, an organization needs to proceed in a pragmatic manner. Key steps of this journey have been documented in particular by the Cloud Standards Customer Council, which has published them in three successive guides, including a 9-step "Practical Guide to Cloud Computing" and two guides related to Cloud Service Agreements.

Why should you attend: Since the Cloud Computing model started taking off around 2007, the vendors have been promising miraculous benefits, and the naysayers have been raising the specter of major disruptions to performance and security.

Without a neutral source of information and a balanced perspective on the advantages and risks of public clouds, CIOs and IT sourcing managers will easily make the wtong decisions. If you adopt a cloud solution that is not well-suited to your needs, under a Service Level Agreement that is biased toward the vendor, you could indeed be faced with disruptions about which you will have ver little control. On the other hand, if you do not adopt any cloud solutions out of fear, your competitors may become more agile and your customers or users will ultimately find that you cannot deploy new capabilities fast enough. You will also continue to pay upfront for a fixed amount of software or hardware that you need to amortize over several years, instead of taking advantage of the cloud’s elasticity and its ability to replace capital investments with operating expenses.

The emergence of the cloud also changes the relationship between IT and the business. If IT cannot deliver new services fast enough, the business will start procuring those services on its own in the cloud. Ultimately, this can make IT irrelevant, and will lead the business to make poor choices in terms of redundant solutions, lack of integration, uneven security, etc. The business needs to understand what’s at stake, and IT needs to use clouds wisely in order to maintain its role as a partner to the business.

Why Your Embedded Device needs an Operating System Webinar By EITAGlobal http://entrepreneurship.org/en/sitecore/content/Sites/Entrepreneurship_org/Home/Events/Listings/Entrepreneurship/2014/September/Why-Your-Embedded-Device-needs-an-Operating-System--Webinar-By-EITAGlobal.aspx Overview: This webinar makes the case that, for all but the smallest 8-bit microcontroller-based systems, an operating system of some form makes sense. We begin by defining the problem: how can we most effectively organize the software/firmware of an embedded device to maximize performance within the constraints of the provided hardware?

We'll examine the polling loop model and analyze its shortcomings. Then we'll look at asynchronous hardware interrupts and see that they are the source of much of the complexity of device-based software. The real-time operating system will be introduced as a way to abstract out the inherent complexity of asynchronous interrupts. We'll then dive into the characteristics and features of operating systems: the tasking model, the scheduler, inter-task communication and synchronization, timing, and of course interrupt handling. We'll consider the problems of sharing resources among multiple tasks. We'll discuss the distinction between an operating system and a kernel. FreeRTOS, a small Open Source kernel, will serve as the model for this entire section.

Next we'll explore design considerations for an OS-based system. How to partition the problem into tasks. We'll look at the idea of dynamic task creation, that is, creating and destroying tasks while the system is running. Solving the resource sharing problem sometimes introduces problems of its own. We'll look at two of these problems, priority inversion and deadly embrace, and assess tech-niques for dealing with them.

Finally, we'll survey some other popular operating systems, both Open Source and pro-prietary, to see where they fit in the grand scheme of things.

Why should you attend: If you're designing and building embedded devices, you really should consider basing the firmware on a real-time operating system (RTOS). Especially in this age of "the Internet of Things", the need for low latency, and in many cases deterministic, response becomes ever more important. Polling loops just can't keep up. The operating system model has a number of advantages. It tends to make systems more modular and reliable. Code breaks down into smaller, more comprehensible units. It scales well. The ultimate result is faster, more efficient software development.

An operating system isn't as mysterious as you might think. It is based on relatively straightforward design principles. It may take some effort to master programming for an OS, but once you do you'll wonder why you wasted time coding polling loops. And operating systems don't always require excessive resources either. Free RTOS, for example, will even run on PIC microcontrollers.

6 Hour Virtual Seminar on Business Architecture Webinar By EITAGlobal http://entrepreneurship.org/en/sitecore/content/Sites/Entrepreneurship_org/Home/Events/Listings/Entrepreneurship/2014/September/6-Hour-Virtual-Seminar-on-Business-Architecture--Webinar-By-EITAGlobal.aspx Overview: This workshop provides participants with a toolset for developing a business architecture that goes well beyond the technology-oriented approaches typically employed by EA. Instead participants are shown how to apply a 5-level framework for modeling any organization, from the top down to the user and enabling technology.

This multi-layered approach makes visible all of the key processing sub-systems and shows how critical business drivers, such as profitability, cost, and quality can be linked to drive performance at all levels. This course expounds on the core concepts described in the book Rediscovering Value: Leading the 3-D Enterprise to Sustainable Success, co-authored by the presenter

Why should you attend: Enterprise Architecture (EA) is an entire discipline within IT, devoted to defining the major components of organizations to which technology is a supporting set of products and services. But EA experts are confused and disagreed about what an enterprise architecture is, how to depict one, and what purpose it serves in guiding technology development.

There is no one model or approach to EA. The Zachman Framework has been referenced again and again in numerous models but it’s never clear what the relationship is to a given EA and Zachman’s original work, nor is there any reason to consider the Zachman model to be correct or superior to anything else. EA is a discipline without any clear standards.

Areas Covered in the Session:

Distinguish between levels of business architecture

Apply a hierarchical structure to the depiction of business processing sub-systems and their linkages between business objectives and work objectives

Identify and practice with modeling tools proven to be most effective for each level of a business architecture

Distinguish between approaches to work system boundary setting that do and don’t support an effective business architecture model

Who Will Benefit:

Business architects

BPM practitioners

Enterprise Architects

Business process modelers

Measurement specialists

Business Glossary First step to Data Governance Success Webinar By EITAGlobal http://entrepreneurship.org/en/sitecore/content/Sites/Entrepreneurship_org/Home/Events/Listings/Entrepreneurship/2014/September/Business-Glossary-First-step-to-Data-Governance-Success--Webinar-By-EITAGlobal.aspx Overview: Often organizations are challenged in selecting the first enterprise wide implementation that the Data Governance (DG) program should address. A Business Glossary is a great first initiative as well as one that provides significant value to the enterprise.

A Business Glossary is the tool for exposing authoritative content from DG initiatives and used to communicate understanding and clarity across the enterprise. A business glossary can connect workers across the enterprise to critical business information they can trust, helping to eliminate misunderstandings that cause lost time, lost opportunities and lost revenue. Creating great definitions and business term names will aid significantly in enabling search capabilities. The Business Glossary should be an early deliverable from your DG program and mature to include the logical and physical data constructs as a valuable component to drive DG maturity and value.

This seminar will be helpful for data management and Governance professionals that have been challenged with any of the following issues:

How to organize the business glossary program for quick wins as well as position for a maturing DG program

Business Intelligence, BPM and KPI ambiguity

Legal and compliance regulations are driving new projects that are not clearly defined (such as TART)

Enterprise or international projects like CDI/MDM that must address terminology and semantic differences across the enterprise

Why should you Attend: Often organizations are challenged in selecting the first enterprise wide implementation that the Data Governance (DG) program should address. A Business Glossary is a great first initiative as well as one that provides significant value to the enterprise. A Business Glossary activity, when addresses as data sprints, can provide the DG program with effective and quick success, as well as great visibility for the program.

Good Governance processes are critical for many enterprises that are:

Unclear how to achieve quick results from Data Governance

Organized geographically introducing global enterprise semantic differences

Challenged by complexity of terminology having many glossaries

Mergers and Acquisitions have introduce semantic differences across the enterprise

Areas Covered in the Session:

Methods for establishing the Business Glossary, standards and best practices

How to leverage your existing Governance team and processes

How to create structured definition standards and name business terms

Techniques to get your Glossary populated and used

Clinical Research Foundation for the Application Concepts and Theories http://entrepreneurship.org/en/sitecore/content/Sites/Entrepreneurship_org/Home/Events/Listings/Entrepreneurship/2014/September/Clinical-Research-Foundation-for-the-Application-Concepts-and-Theories.aspx Overview:

This two day seminar will provide the foundation for the application, concepts and theories of clinical research. Within the two days, attendees will learn about the historical evolution of research, current regulations and guidelines including the Common Rule, FDA regulations and HIPAA. We will discuss site and study staff responsibilities in the conduct and reporting of research, types of studies and the regulatory requirements that apply to different study designs. We will discuss a variety of research including genetic, drug, device, and studies that use off-site or community partners. Current examples will be used and the audience will be invited to share their experiences and information.

Why should you attend:

For those involved in or wanting to be involved in research dealing with human subjects or an individual's private identifiable information, protection of human subjects and all that this topic encompasses is imperative to know as there federal regulations that must be followed. In addition to federal regulations, there are state statues, institutional policies, federal guidance documents, and ethical codes that guide the conduct of the research so that it not only meets the regulatory requirements but so that the study is conducted in an ethical manner containing adequate protections for the individuals who elect to enroll in the research or allow their information to be used for research. Guidelines also provide interpretation of the regulations which are not always as clear as they might appear upon first reading them. Attendance at this two day session will not only provide an introduction or refresher of the regulations, it will also provide attendees with the opportunity to discuss and learn how these regulations, ethical codes and guidance documents get applied in different situations. This information can then be used to help attendees in their day-to-day decision making when confronted with situations or questions regarding how to handle issues that do arise (e.g. a participant not showing for a scheduled appointment, an event that is unexpected occurs, someone who does not speak wishes to enroll in the study, a participate signed an outdated consent document, etc.) when conducting human subjects

Areas Covered in the Session:

• Department of Health and Human Services regulations, 45 CFR 46

• Office for Human Research Protections Guidance

• The FDA regulations, 21 CFR 50, 56, 312, 314, 812, 814

Building an Information Technology Roadmap Webinar By EITAGlobal http://entrepreneurship.org/en/sitecore/content/Sites/Entrepreneurship_org/Home/Events/Listings/Entrepreneurship/2014/September/Building-an-Information-Technology-Roadmap--Webinar-By-EITAGlobal.aspx Overview: All enterprises, except the smallest ones, need to define, control and execute a series of actions or projects to support the business with appropriate information technology and systems.

A good IT roadmap needs to meet several demanding requirements:

It must be sufficiently high-level to be discussed with business stakeholders

Each action/project must have a clear justification

It needs to be realistic - you cannot do everything at once

It needs to be clear and detailed enough for IT people so they can clearly understand what to do to fulfill it

It must evolve as conditions change, and it must be kept up-to-date through these changes

It needs to incorporate the capabilities offered by new technologies without seeming to be "technology for technology's sake"

A roadmap driven by an understanding of Enterprise Architecture (EA) allows IT to describe and maintain the connection between the various levels of concern: business capabilities and business processes, business systems/applications, and the technical infrastructure. Therefore, it allows the organization to justify and prioritize each IT project. The development of the actual roadmap is a serious and intense exercise - something that may take at minimum a couple of person-months, and much more if there is little prior information about the existing portfolio and the business requirements. In this webinar, we describe a systematic approach that allows the development of the roadmap.

Depending on the existing level of knowledge, a systematic education effort may need to be provided on the concepts and frameworks for Enterprise Architecture, including Zachman and TOGAF. In particular, the TOGAF Architecture Development Method (ADM) is usually relevant to most organizations. At the same time, TOGAF is a very complex framework, and it is not necessary to master it in its entirety to correctly define an IT roadmap.

Next, the entire IT organization, as well as its business partners, and in particular the people who will be tasked with developing the roadmap, need to understand, tailor if necessary, and document the various levels of the enterprise architecture, starting with the business strategy and the value streams at the top, and going all the way to the infrastructure layers. There will be IT roadmap elements at almost every level, except the top-most ones which are the responsibility of the executive management, but everything else needs to be well positioned and well aligned in the roadmap.

The outcome of the process should be (a) a living document, easy to communicate and review, that both the business and IT can use to prioritize and monitor their actions, (2) a list of "follow-on" projects that will need to be performed in order to place the entire range of IT efforts on a solid basis; these projects may include the institution of a Product/Project Portfolio Management system, the creation of a business process center of excellence, the convergence of multiple redundant systems, the retirement of legacy systems, the externalization of certain capabilities (outsourcing, cloud, or BPO), the creation of an Enterprise Architecture Program, a Master Data Management program, a technology watch program, and more.

Why should you attend: All enterprises, except the smallest ones, need to define, control and execute a series of actions or projects to support the business with appropriate information technology and systems. Several difficulties immediately appear when the CIO or IT Manager attempts to define such a roadmap:

How do you take the business strategy, as defined by C-level executives, and derive from it a set of actions?

How do you engage with business people to review and agree on that roadmap, given that business managers often do not understand the technology, IT people do not speak in business terms?

How do you deal with the ever-increasing complexity of IT?

How do you handle legacy systems, especially after mergers and acquisitions?

A good IT roadmap needs to meet several demanding requirements:

It must be sufficiently high-level to be discussed with business stakeholders

Each action/project must have a clear justification

It needs to be realistic - you cannot do everything at once

It needs to be clear and detailed enough for IT people so they can clearly understand what to do to fulfill it

It must evolve as conditions change, and it must be kept up-to-date through these changes

It needs to incorporate the capabilities offered by new technologies without seeming to be "technology for technology's sake"

Many organizations conduct projects in isolation from each other, without having a clear view of where they are going. With this approach, you can run in circles or hit a wall. Other organizations dive down immediately to the level of detailed project plans, which are useless beyond a short-term horizon. Yet others have an IT roadmap or plan that is disconnected from the business strategy and requirements, so that it is hard to justify the cost of the projects to the business. Clearly, a more systematic and well-grounded approach is required.

Dynamic APIs and Dynamic Schemas The Secrets of Building Inherently Flexible Software http://entrepreneurship.org/en/sitecore/content/Sites/Entrepreneurship_org/Home/Events/Listings/Entrepreneurship/2014/September/Dynamic-APIs-and-Dynamic-Schemas-The-Secrets-of-Building-Inherently-Flexible-Software.aspx Overview: The central technical challenge for Agile Architecture is how to achieve functionality and performance without having to trade off flexibility. The context for these central patterns of Agile Architecture is the concept of architecting at a dynamic level of abstraction above the logical level of contracted APIs and data schemas.

At this dynamic level, there are the central patterns that are essential to resolving the fundamental compromise of distributed computing:

Dynamic Coupling. Tightly coupled interfaces require detailed knowledge of both sides of a distributed computing interaction, and any change on one side might break the other. Contracted interfaces introduce loose coupling, but at the expense of a static interface. With dynamic coupling, interface differences are resolved dynamically at run time.

Dynamic Schemas. Neither the WSDL files that specify Web Services, nor the URIs, HTTP verbs, and Internet Media Types that specify RESTful APIs adequately contract the message semantics for any interaction. Dynamic schemas abstract all semantic metadata in a consistent way, relying once again upon the integration engine to resolve these dynamic schemas for each interaction at run time.

Extreme Late Binding. SOA registries ended up doing little more than resolving endpoint references at run time, similar to the way DNS resolves domain names - in other words, they provided late binding. Such late binding adds some flexibility to an interaction, but typically at the expense of performance. Today, however, dynamic coupling and dynamic schemas enable any client to discover at run time all the metadata it requires to interact with any endpoint, without sacrificing performance - what we call extreme late binding.

Put these architectural principles together and you have an approach for building inherently flexible software, even in a complicated distributed computing environment.

Why should you attend: The central challenge of distributed computing is how to get your various distributed bits to communicate with each other properly. Since those distributed components are typically heterogeneous, we must somehow come up with a common means of establishing interaction among components everybody can agree on. Yet, once we do that, we've necessarily compromised on flexibility, because changing how our components interact is a difficult, complex endeavor. This problem pervades the entire history of APIs, from remote procedure calls to Web Services to RESTful APIs and everything in between. We must somehow contract interfaces in order to abstract the underlying functionality, yet the very act of introducing such contracts is a compromise, since the interface itself now lacks flexibility.

Areas Covered in the Session:

Review of Web Services and RESTful APIs

Limitations of contracted interfaces

Challenges of document style services

Challenges of custom media types

Meta, Dynamic, and Logical abstractions
