Definition: Clinical trials

Clinical trials are research studies to test the effectiveness of new medical approaches in people. Healthcare entrepreneurs must perform clinical trials in order to bring their new drug or device to market.

There is an action plan, known as a protocol, for conducting each clinical trial. It describes what will be done in the study and how it will be conducted. In the U.S., an independent committee of doctors, statisticians, and community members approve and monitor the protocol.
